New Succulent Water Trough

So if you will remember a couple of years ago I bought some water troughs to plant succulents in against the house.  If you click the link above you can check them out.  At the same time that I bought these 6 foot troughs I bought a 4 foot trough that I thought could be for vegetables.   To make a long story short.......vegetables want water everyday!!!  I don't have the attention span for that.  Needless to say my harvest was terrible!  LOL

So I decided to plant succulents in it.  Of course!

Succulent Water Trough front view

As you can see I jammed a ton of succulents inside.  Since this part of my back patio receives lots of afternoon sun I have an umbrella over this so it doesn't get  fried!  I pulled it away to take photos!

Pot inside Trough

Since that crazy Ferocactus with the super long spines doesn't want as much water as the rest of the plants I thought I would stick a pot inside the trough.  Now I can water it separately.  It also adds interest.  But then I planted that little blue barrel cactus so we will see how this turns out.  Wish I had a name for this Ferocactus.  It didn't come with a name on the pot.

Here is a view from a different direction.

Echeveria 'Lotus'

Don't you just love this huge Echeveria!  It is called 'Lotus'.

Dykia 'Burgundy Ice'

And this beautiful red spiny thing is Dykia 'Burgundy Ice'.

Cotyledon orbiculata var. oblonga 'Flavida' - Finger Aloe flower

This Cotyledon orbiculata var. oblonga 'Flavida' just keeps putting out flowers.  The bees and hummingbirds just love these.

Dykia 'Marnier x Lapostllei'

Besides the Cotyledon I planted this Dykia 'Marnier x Lapostllei'.  I got it at the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show this year.  The top dressing I used was this small lava rock I found in three different colors.  I really like it!

So water troughs are great planters and don't cost a ton.  And they last a really long time.

Hope you are all having a great weekend and remember:

My Awesome Mother's Day Gift

So for Mother's Day my husband gave me the coolest gift ever!  I have been ding donging him for a long time to give me some lawn to plant succulents.  So when I came downstairs to start my day I was surprised when grass fell out of my Mother's Day card.   I didn't really get it....duh until I went on Facebook and saw a pic of the side lawn.  It said Mother's Day gift to Candice!

What a wonderful card and some of the grass!  LOL

So this is the area.  We have stopped watering and in this heat it won't take long for lots of the grass to die.  Our line is kind of from the pole to the fence.  I already have a planter at the fence but now that I look at it.  Geez, what the heck!  It's a huge area.  My mind is a whirl as to what to do.  It is a REALLY hot spot.  I will definitely plant a Palo Verde tree.  I got this idea from my friend Gerhard Bock.  Gerhard writes Succulents and More.  He has planted a couple and they look perfect for a rock garden.

Got this great book by Pam Penick a year or so ago.  If you are thinking of removing some lawn this would be your go to book.  You can order it here!

Driveway view

Here is a view of my chunk of real estate from the driveway.  I am thinking lots of rocks and of course succulents.  Probably agave's and such.  I have a couple that are in other planters and need more room.  So I will transplant them.  Then some barrel cactus.  Want to plant some lavender and some other flowering plants to attract bees.

Succulent planter

This is the planter at the fence end of the grass.  The only reason I can plant some of the softer succulents here is because of that huge bush that belongs to the neighbors.  If it ever goes I will have to plant a tree or change this up.  Sorry about the blown out photo on the right.  It can be hard to photograph this area.

Echeveria 'Mahogany'

I love this Echeveria 'Mohogany' that I have planted.  I only planted one and it multiplied!  I love that about succulents.

Echeveria 'Coral Glow'

Echeveria 'Coral Glow' is sending out this amazing flower stalks right now!

So I will be going down to the Succulent Celebration on the 6-7 of June in Escondido, CA.  I hope to pick up a couple plants to go in this area.  I will be gone for about a week and hopefully we will be able to start this project when I get home!  Woohoo, so excited!

Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend everyone and remember:

Succulent Celebration 2014

A wonderful, magical succulent event is coming up in a couple of weeks and you don't want to miss it.  The 2nd annual Succulent Celebration will take place on June 6-7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Located on the beautiful growing grounds of Waterwise Botanicals, 32183 Old Highway 395, Escondido, CA.  Last year was a wonderful fun filled two days of succulents, speakers and visiting with other Fanatics!  Please make sure you click here to RSVP!

Just had to tease you with a photo of just a few of the plants for sale!  It's like Candy to a baby!

The above photo tells it all.  And let me tell you the Food Trucks are awesome.  And look at the lineup of speakers!!  I am really excited to hear everyone this year!!!  So much to learn.

Here is a great shot I took of Debra Lee Baldwin speaking and potting up this fabulous pot last year!  She will be speaking both days.   She has so much to teach you and what a great sense of humor she has.  And if your lucky she might even throw you a cutting!

As you can see they also had some great bromeliads for sale!

Don't you love this old stove they had all decked out with succulent pottings!

This is just part of the bounty I took home from Waterwise last year!

So I will be making the trip down South in my new Subaru.  I'm excited to make the road trip.  I can't wait to see all my succulent friends and hope that I see you too.  If you are going please RSVP so Waterwise gets an idea how many people to expect.  It is a blast and I would love to have you join me!

Until later take care and remember:

Sacramento Cactus & Succulent Society Show & Sale 2014

This year's show and sale here in Sacramento is sure to be a good one.  I was there during setup yesterday and oh boy there is so much to see and buy.  Sure hope you can attend.  If you can't go today don't worry it will be going strong tomorrow and I will be there!

I have a planting of my Mother's Day basket entered this year in the Planter competition and I was asked to put together one of the 5 large shadow boxes.  Boy that was a job!  The box is huge.  And I wandered around Joanne's for a couple of hours to find things I could put inside.  The theme is Succulent Samba!  lol  Boy and the competition is fierce!  The others did such a great job.  This one is voted on my people coming in the door.  So you never know!

So now it is Saturday night and I found out I came in 2nd!  That is great!
